Walk this Way: Tips for Your Walk-In Closet Design

Hardwood floors. Custom Cabinetry. Accent lights. All of these things are associated with luxury modern design. But do you know who the true star of your luxury home should be? The closet. Yep, that’s right. Nothing says luxury like a custom walk-in closet design that puts your personal needs front and center. When it comes to luxury closet design, you have to start with a few simple questions. What is the function of this closet going to be? What form will it take? And of course, what do you need to store in it?

Modern Italian design principles dictate that your luxury closet design should include no visible hardware, with floating shelves and a minimal, unobtrusive look. The goal is to make your closet look less like a haphazard storage space and more like an elegant shop window, where your most precious pieces are both easily accessible and displayed with love.

Customizing your Walk-In Closet

While we’d never stop you from scouring Pinterest for closet design ideas – we do it too! – it’s important to keep in mind that the perfect walk-in closet for you is going to be one designed specifically around your needs. At NOLI, we start by sitting down with our clients to discuss what they’ll be storing and displaying in their closet, then create a design based on those needs.

For example, an avid shoe collector (Hello Carrie Bradshaw!) will need a dedicated place to store their collection that is both visually appealing and easily accessible. Or let’s say we have a client with a large number of floor length gowns (Hello Princess Diana!). In this case, we’d want to make sure there is enough hanging space to accommodate these pieces without letting them drag on the ground or collect dust.

At NOLI, once we’ve assessed what a client will be storing in their new luxury closet, we then start to think about workflow. This means making sure that the things you use the most are visible and easily accessible, while specialty items you use less often are displayed in a way that keeps them in perfect condition for the next time you use them.

Hanging space, drawers, shoe racks, drawer inserts, safes, shelving – all of these things can be part of your bespoke walk-in closet! We can even add in seating, mirrors, and other personal touches like custom finishes to create a true boutique experience in your home. It all depends on you, your needs, and your taste.

Remember: the “best” design system for your closet is the one that’s tailored to you!

Lighting Your Walk-In Closet

Now that your closet system is designed, it’s time to layer in your lighting. Lighting will play a major role in the design of your walk-in closet. You’ll need a mixture of both mood, task, and general lighting to make your closet truly functional (read more about the different types of lighting here), and of course, we’re going to want all those fixtures to be hidden to give your closet a truly modern look.

Again, we want to think of your closet as a mini-boutique/personal sanctuary in your home. That means you’re going to need general lighting that ensures enough luminosity in the space, mood lighting so that you (and your items) can look your best as you browse, and task lighting to make sure everything you have stored there is easily seen.

Ready to get started on the walk-in closet design of your dreams? At NOLI, we work with you from the very beginning to ensure that your closet system is designed with only one thing in mind: you. We put form and function at the forefront of our closet designs to ensure the space is exactly what you need.
