Modern Bathroom Vanities: To Float or Not to Float?

What is the focal point of your modern bathroom design? It’s not the shower, tub, or  – ahem – porcelain throne. It’s the vanity. More than any other space, the vanity is where you’ll spend the most time primping, brushing your teeth, and making sure your hair is looking just right before heading out in the world. So how do you make sure your bathroom’s vanity fits seamlessly into your modern aesthetic while still providing what you need in terms of functionality and organization? We have to start with the simple principles of modern design.

Modern bathroom vanities use the same visual language as other modern cabinetry. This means no (or very minimal) visible hardware, rounded shapes for a more organic look, and matching modern bathroom fixtures in natural colors and materials. At NOLI, we love to incorporate a floating vanity and integrated sink into our bathroom designs, as you can see with this gorgeous ultrawide suspended vanity we created for a client in Covington, Kentucky:

Things to Consider When Designing Your Modern Vanity

When parsing through all the bathroom vanity ideas on Pinterest to figure out what works for you, you’ll want to start by thinking about the mood you want your modern master bathroom to evoke. Moody blues, calming greens, and neutral, elegant tones can all help create the ambiance of your modern bathroom. Pops of color are always welcome, so long as they’re done in a way that enhances the vibe without overpowering it. Additionally, incorporating natural materials like wood or stone can help to create a tranquil, spa-like atmosphere for your modern master bathroom.

You’re also going to need to consider what you’ll actually be using your vanity for. Do you need space for beauty products like a hair dryer, brushes, makeup kit, or personalized collection of skincare products? You may think your storage needs mean you’ll have to let go of your floating vanity dreams, but that’s simply not the case!

As you can see with this spa bathroom we designed in Cincinnati’s brewery district, it’s possible to create a truly modern, elegant floating vanity that includes enough storage space for all your needs without any compromises of style.

Lighting Your Modern Vanity

If you’re someone who knows you’ll be spending time applying makeup in front of your vanity mirror, then you also know one thing: lighting is crucial. The mirror is a separate but integral part of your vanity that should be accessorized with light to ensure you keep yourself looking as good as your modern spa bathroom does.  Because let’s face it…what’s the point of having a custom vanity mirror if you can’t properly see yourself in it?

To achieve this, you’ll want your mirror to have the same floating look as the rest of your vanity, with recessed task lighting coming from behind the mirror. This ensures that all the fixtures remain invisible, while still allowing you to see yourself properly and without sacrificing the modern aesthetic.

Even in this darker powder room, recessed lighting around the mirror ensured that our clients (and their guests!) will still have plenty of light for makeup and hair retouches without having to worry they missed a streak of blush on their cheek or bronzer on their chin.
